Zwift Winter-Spring League: Rnd 2 Results

Round 2: astoria line 8

The second round of the Zwift Winter-Spring League saw us make a stop at a new course – New York’s Astoria Line 8. Named after NYC’s first subway line, this course takes in all the roads of Central Park. The rolling profile can be deceiving across the 22.6km, with plenty of opportunity for riders to make a break, or be dropped!

In a second, we will take a look at how this week’s 310 riders fared but first – a quick note – these tables are of Triathlon Ireland riders only but we rely on you to tell us this fact through club affiliation – we have a whole section on how the table is calculated and what to do if you don’t see your name on this page – just scroll down to the bottom of the article.

A LEAGUE INDIVIDUAL MEN

Position Name Club Points
1 Enda Bagnall Eden TC 122
2 Adriele Prina Belpark TC 105
3 Don Lapierre Cork TC 102

In the men’s league, Don Lapierre made a big jump from 8th in the TT to second in Central Park….moving him into third on the leaderboard after Round 2. Eden TC’s Enda Bagnall and Belpark’s Adriel Prina were both familiar names during our Autumn League lineup, and have made their mark early this time around to hold first and second respectively.

The competitive A league already has a number of contenders inside the top ten, with just 28 points separating 2nd and 10th.

A LEAGUE INDIVIDUAL WOMEN
This week we didn’t have any Triathlon Ireland members taking part in the A league, but we’re delighted to welcome top Irish cyclist Eve McCrystal to the starting pen in virtual NYC!

Two familiar names from the Autumn League are currently on the top spots in the Women’s Cat B League – Gail Martin and Medbh Peavoy. Pulse TC’s Medbh Peavoy’s Winter training is paying off in watts, having made the move up from Cat C in the Autumn League, and she is already making her mark here!

Tri Limit’s Helen Perry has had a solid opening to her Winter-Spring campaign in the first two round to hold third, but Limerick’s Kathy Fahy is just 6 points back in fourth. A good result for Fahy next week could pay dividends.

B league INDIVIDUAL MEN

Position Name Club Points
1 Kevin Gilleece  3D TC 110
2 Gary Condell Trilogy TC 99
3 Brian Stanley  Piranha TC 93

Consistency is already paying off in a competitive Cat B league! Oran Kane and Oliver Harkin were first and second last night but it wasn’t enough for them to yet reach the top of the league table. Third last night and a win in the TT sees 3D Tri Club’s Kevin Gilleece hold onto the top spot moving into week three.

It really is all to play for in this category, with a large entry and close results – the next few weeks are going to be interesting!

D LEAGUE INDIVIDUAL woMEN’S

Position Name Club Points
1 Toni Eglington  Blackwater TC 110
2 Joanne Murphy 107
2 Louise McGirl 107

Blackwater TC’s Toni Eglington leads the women’s D league thanks to her victory in last night’s race and 4th place in Round 1.

Behind her, well known race commentator, podcaster and MC of the Triathlon Ireland awards Joanne Murphy is locked in an interesting tie with Louise McGirl. In Round 1 McGirl finished 2nd to Murphy’s 3rd place, while last night the roles were reversed. All in all just three points separate the top positions in the women’s D league – these places are very much up for grabs in Round 3.

D LEAGUE INDIVIDUAL MEN’S

Position Name Club Points
1 Stephen Smyth  3D TC 112
2 Alan Mitchell Eden TC 98
2 David Lynam Cork TC 98

Stephen Smyth didn’t manage to repeat his victory from Round 1 last night but third was sufficient nonetheless to see him take a commanding 14 point lead at the top of the men’s D league ahead of Alan Mitchell and Cork Tri’s David Lynam – both of whom are tied on 98 points. Like the women’s league, the men’s D Cat looks like it could see plenty of action over the coming weeks.

Results

You can see all the race results and dig in to the in-depth data on the race’s ZwiftPower page.

In contrast to Triathlon Ireland’s autumn league, the 2021 Winter-Spring League does not have its own page on Zwift Power. Instead we are compiling the individual and club rankings ourselves – this is being done to ensure we can allocate points equally to men and women.

The same scoring criteria apply from our previous league: (with women and men assigned points separately).

1st : 61 points
2nd : 56 points
3rd : 51 points
4th-50th : 49-3 points
Every finisher from 51st onwards will receive 1 point.

The team competition pulls points each week from a club’s best five riders – unlike the Autumn League however once each week’s club score is finalised it can’t change of a rider subsequently changes teams.

Why Am I Not There?

If you don’t see your name on either the ZwiftPower race results sheet or the Triathlon Ireland league standings here are some leads to follow up:

FILTERED RIDERS

ZwiftPower will ‘filter’ (aka exclude) any results from riders for a number of reasons, the most common being the absence of a heart rate monitor, a verified power meter or those who entered a power category below their ability/exceeded the W/kg for the power category they entered.

These are automated decisions based on power and made by ZwiftPower not Triathlon Ireland.

While Zwift racing is primarily about having fun, we have a responsibility to ensure that any race that carried our name is also fair so unfortunately if you were excluded or ‘filtered’ it is for a legitimate reason. Filtering is an automatic, data based decision by ZwiftPower designed to ensure an above board race.

We know it can be heart braking when your HR monitor or Power Meter data fail you in a race but view it like having a mechanical that causes you to pull out of a real life race – it’s unfortunate but not grounds to have your result re-instated.

League Tables

If you are missing from the Triathlon Ireland League Table it is likely for one of two reasons
– You are not assigned to a Triathlon Ireland club on ZwiftPower
– You are not assigned to Triathlon Ireland on ZwiftPower

Only riders assigned to a Triathlon Ireland club or to Triathlon Ireland (as a club) will be included in the results sheets. If however you are a Triathlon Ireland 2021 member and have been left off for these reasons, drop us an email – we are happy to re-instate you. Please email roisin@triathlonireland.com.

Only riders assigned to a Triathlon Ireland club will be added to the Club Rankings tables.
