Triathlon Ireland Clubs Receive Record State Investment

A record €370,000 is being awarded to Triathlon Ireland clubs as part of the Sports Capital Grant scheme.
It’s the largest sum ever invested by the State in triathlon clubs and reflects both the ambition of club committees to grow triathlon within their communities, and also the increased number of clubs who have been successful in their applications.
The total sum is being shared by 25 clubs and the funding will be used for safety and training equipment.
Triathlon Ireland has also been awarded €54,419 to fund our plan to increase the inclusion and diversity in triathlon.
Darren Coombes, Triathlon Ireland CEO said the investment is a landmark moment for triathlon.
“It recognises our growing ability to deliver against key National Sports Policy objectives, and we are genuinely delighted with the support.”
Mr Coombes continued: “We are enormously grateful to the staff team at the Department and in particular Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin; and Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs and Sport Jack Chambers for their ongoing support of the sport sector during what has been the most challenging of times.”
“This funding will enable our clubs to continue to transform lives, enhance the health of their communities and open access to swim, bike and run for thousands of people across the country. It is important to recognise the efforts of the volunteers across all of the applicant clubs, who put in a huge amount of time and effort to deliver this grant outcome for their club,” Mr Coombes said.
How It’s Spent
We spoke to two clubs to get an idea of how the funding will impact their operations, Rebecca Purcell from Clonmel Triathlon Club said the €30,000 allocation will be used to purchase training equipment for use in the Clonmel Sports Hub when complete, as well as equipment to support Clonmel TC’s junior members.
“This is a very exciting development for our club which will enhance the training and performance of our members,” she said.
Roisin Cloleman from West Clare TC said her club was ‘overjoyed’ to be granted €17,997.
“For a small club like ours bringing in new members both junior and adults alike is of upmost importance to us. It will give us an opportunity to upgrade existing equipment without it costing the club especially when we’ve had no income with the last two years.
“It’s just fantastic that we will now have more equipment and triathlon gear available to potential members to give them the opportunity to get a feel for the sport of triathlon before they commit (we all know how expensive it can get).”
“It’s important to us to have a selection of bike sizes, turbo trainers, and wetsuits to name but a few available for both adult and juniors so they can get the feel of what a triathlon is like, not having a bike or wetsuit of their own won’t stop them now if they want to join our family friendly encouraging club.”
