O’Reilly & Gallagher win 2021 BMW Triathlon National Series

This year’s BMW Triathlon National Series had an atmosphere like no other, and it was INCREDIBLE! A jam packed 14 races in nine weeks saw the triathlon community travel country-wide on the points hunt.

This year, because opportunities to race were a little more limited, we’ve changed the series qualifying criteria. To get a final ranking in the Series, an athlete needed to race in any three events.

Below, we see where the podium points were won, and list all of the Age Group winners for the 2021 BMW Triathlon National Series.

But before we get to the age group and overall winners, a ‘Thank You’ from us;

To the triathlon community…

To each and every triathlete who trained at home for so long, waiting for race season to come back. To every race organiser and club who worked overtime long and hard to make their races happen, while keeping the community safe. To each marshal, technical official, club member and everyone else on event sites who greeted the returning athletes with smiles and cheers. To the triathlon community as a whole. It has been so exciting to see the return of our sport over the 2021 season and the enjoyment that it has brought, THANK YOU! We’ll see you in 2022!

Overall Winners

Aichlinn O’Reilly and Maeve Gallagher are the overall winners of this year’s BMW Triathlon National Series.

Over the 2021 season, series winner Maeve Gallagher balanced her international racing with winning all four of the BMW Triathlon National Series races she entered!

Mayo athlete Maeve is also a double 2021 National Champion after winning the Sprint Distance Champs at Boland’s BMW Hook or by Crook and the Standard Distance Champs at Westport Triathlon. Gallagher’s three-race points tally is completed with her early season win at Predator Triathlon Club’s Loughrea Sprint Triathlon.

Westport Triathlon Club’s Aichlinn O’Reilly wins this year’s series with three of his four standout results counting towards the final tally. Making a return to triathlon this year after a break, O’Reilly wasn’t off the podium in any of his race starts this season. Aichlinn O’Reilly scored his first points when starting the season with a second in Loughrea at the start of August. A busy September’s racing saw Aichlinn triumph over middle distance at Metalman Triathlon, although the strength of his other results meant this impressive result was not needed for the final points total.

Back to back podiums in the sprint and standard distance national champs at Boland’s BMW Hook or by Crook and Westport Triathlon sealed the 2021 BMW Triathlon National Series title for Aichlinn O’Reilly.

Second-placed Shannon Kelly was certainly the busiest triathlete of the season. By our calculations Kelly was the only athlete across the entire series to complete seven of the 14 rounds!

Not to mention that while racing hard across five days on three consecutive weekends, Shannon was on the podium in Hazelwood, Boland’s BMW Hook or by Crook, Rosslare Pikeman, Westport and Ballyhass as well as early season podiums in Mourne Triathlon and Loughrea. A well earned silver in the 2021 BMW Triathlon National Series with 378.002 points, less than two points behind winner Maeve Gallagher.

Oran McGee from Muckno Triathlon Club had strong performances across all the distances to earn his points and second in the BMW Triathlon National Series.

A win at Round Six in Carlingford earned McGee his highest points of the series. Fourth at the Sprint Distance National Champs and a hard-fought second at Sheephaven Half completed Oran McGee’s points haul. Along the way, McGee also won silver at this year’s Middle Distance National Champs at TriTyrone in the first race of the series.

Bronze in the Women’s BMW Triathlon National Series goes to Newry TC’s Catherine Sands.

Taking the minimum three races (and three impressive results!) to earn her points, Catherine Sands started her series bid with a bronze at the Tri-Tyrone Middle Distance National Champs. Convincing wins at both Carlingford Olympic Tri and Sheephaven Half earned Catherine the third spot on this year’s BMW Triathlon National Series podium.

Eoin Lyons is no stranger to the BMW Triathlon National Series podium, and is the only one of our top finishers to have also medalled in 2019.

Starting the series with a fourth placed finish at the Middle Distance Champs in Tyrone, Lyons went on to complete his points bid with wins at both Rosslare and Lough Cutra Standard Distance Races.
