down to the wire
In a closely fought points race, Aaron Doherty has won the men’s 2019 BMW Triathlon National Series, in his first full season of triathlon!
With just 0.163 separating Aaron from second placed Eoin Lyons and less than 3.5 points separating the top four athletes, the series went all the way to the last races of the season for the winner to be decided.
Eighteen races made up this year’s BMW Triathlon National Series, with an athlete’s four best scoring races counting towards their final ranking. One of these races must be a sprint distance event and one must be a standard distance.
A total of 1898 men took part in the series – below we run through the top three and list the gold, silver and bronze medalists for every age group in the BMW Triathlon National Series.
a win at home
Until 2019, Aaron Doherty’s focus has been on the cycling world. Following in older brother Con’s footsteps, Aaron made the move to triathlon this season, and what an impressive season it turned out to be! Showing strong bike and run form, Aaron stood on the podium in five of the six BMW Triathlon National Series races that he entered this year.
Winning his home race in Westport announced Aaron Doherty’s arrival on the domestic triathlon scene as a force to be reckoned with. Rarely outside the top two coming off the bike, Doherty had to battle it out on the run more than once this season. James Walton and Niall Cornyn (third and fourth placed in this year’s series) ensured that Aaron had to work hard to stay ahead on more than one occasion.
Still racing the youngest 18 – 19 age group, a late season win at Lough Key Triathlon sealed a first time BMW Triathlon National Series victory for Aaron Doherty.
Eoin Lyons in second place
Focussing his efforts on middle distance racing in recent years, Eoin Lyons was as much of a challenge to the leaderboard as ever. Ahead of racing the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in Nice, Lyons made a charge at the BMW Triathlon National Series rankings, making the podium in each of his four races.
First scoring points at Boland’s BMW Hook or by Crook, where Eoin was second to Kieran Jackson in an exciting race closely fought to the later stages of the run.
At the Middle Distance National Championships in Sheephaven, Lyons ran out of run course – closing on leader Chris Mintern late into the run and finishing second just 19 seconds back after a tough morning’s racing. Within a week Eoin was racing again, this time at the Standard Distance National Championships at Base2Race Wicklow Harbourman Triathlon. In fifth after the bike, Eoin Lyons dug deep on the ten kilometre run course to finish in third.
Another third at iTri Ennis in a strong field complete the series on a total of 494.477.
Third place: James Walton
2019 National Aquathlon Champion James Walton is third in this year’s BMW Triathlon National Series. Taking an early win in the third round of the series at Crooked Lake started James’ season.
In an exciting race at Two Provinces Triathlon, Walton was close to chasing down Aaron Doherty, finishing just ten seconds back for second place. Another convincing win at Lough Neagh gave Triangle TC’s James another points boost, as did an impressive fourth place in a top class field at the Base2Race Wicklow Harbourman Triathlon.
A late season win for Niall Cornyn (pictured below) at Moby Dick Triathlon put Cornyn within 1.3 points of James Walton but in the end it wasn’t enough to secure third spot. James Walton finishes third in this year’s BMW Triathlon National Series.
