National Weekend Round-Up – 30 June/1 July
We’re approaching the mid-point of the triathlon season now, with four more Triathlon Ireland sanctioned events taking place last weekend in Munster, Ulster and Leinster. The weather continued to remain settled across the country with temperatures in the low to mid twenties, providing different conditions than many athletes are used to racing in here in Ireland, and a great weekend’s racing!
Hell of the West
One of the longest running triathlons in the country, the standard distance Hell of the West triathlon run by Limerick Triathlon Club, took place in Kilkee on Saturday. Aichlinn O’Reilly followed up his recent wins at Lough Cutra Castle and TriAthy with winning the men’s race while Mary Corless won the women’s race.

Sheephaven Middle Distance Triathlon
The inaugural Sheephaven Middle Distance Triathlon, run by Letterkenny 24/7 Triathlon Club took place on Saturday, 30th June. A hugely scenic race in the north of the country, the course provided a challenge both in terrain and hot weather on the day. Laura Wylie and Brian Sexton were the first winners of this middle distance race.

waterways ireland TriAthlone
The always popular Waterways Ireland TriAthlone also took place on Saturday, 30th June. In hot conditions, sun cream was certainly the order of the day as almost 400 athletes descended on the midlands town to race across three distances.
In the standard distance race, Sari Coakley and Michael Scully were the first home. Carolyn Hayes and Stephen Donnelly won the sprint race while Cormac Clogher and Berenice Caulfield won the Super Sprint race. Full results from all distances can be found on Red Tag Timing here.

Blessington Triathlon
This event was running for the first time under new organisers, Belpark Triathlon Club in association with Blessington Sailing Club. In the unique and private location on the Blessington Lakes with the Sailing Club as HQ, the sold-out race saw 355 competitors arrive to race across sprint, standard and standard aquabike distances.
Paul Ogle and Roisin Mossop were the winners of the standard distance triathlon. In the sprint distance, Belpark members Bronagh McConnell and Patrick Barry came home first. The standard distance aquabike saw Ross Hamilton and Martina Duignan top the podium.
