Horn Wins Lough Cutra Men’s Super Series
Internationals Reign at Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon
New Location, New Faces
The first round of the Triathlon Ireland Super Series began in very challenging conditions at Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon in Galway. The two day festival of triathlon hosted a Super Series race for the first time amid the stunning scenery of the private estate near Gort.
But with twelve hours of solid rain drenching the course overnight, conditions were challenging for the men and women toeing the start line shortly after 8am.
In the men’s race, the field appeared to be wide open with many of last year’s podium athletes such as Darren Dunne, Chris Mintern, Con Doherty and Kieran Jackson abroad on a high performance training camp in the Pyrenees.
Cat 2
But while the field might have been less familiar, there was plenty of depth on view, with 28 men – many of whom were racing for the first time as Cat2 athletes – toeing the line.
German junior Moritz Horn led the race from start to finish but didn’t have matters all his own way as Lewis Bryam made him work hard for the victory.
17-year-old Horn emerged from the 750m swim with a 30secs lead over the rest of the field with Byram, Sebastian Helka Ross Higgins and Brian Glynn all within 15secs of each other.
Byram, Glynn and Horn came together on what was a very technical and challenging bike course, maintaining a lead of half a minute over the chasing group of Higgins, Tiernan Burke, Cathal Browne, Dave Richardson, Rory Sexton and Aichlinn O’Reilly.
Horn and Byram – who finished 3rd in the Super Series race at Dublin City Triathlon last year – pulled clear during the 5km cross county run though the grounds of Lough Cutra Castle and were separated by a mere 6secs at the finish line.
Teenager, Horn had the stronger kick however and pulled clear to cross the line with a time of 59mins 48secs.
Byram went one better than his result at DCT, taking second place with Brian Glynn taking third place.
Horn said afterwards, that he found conditions challenging: “it was very difficult, the bike was very slippery, at the turns I almost fell twice.”
