Coaching Scholarship

What is this initiative?
 

The Community Coach Scholarship is an opportunity for an individual who may be interested in becoming a volunteer and/or paid coach to access coaching courses and support to become a coach. This initiative will target underserved groups in our sport and aim to increase visibility of community coaching. 

Why are we offering this?
 

We want everyone to have the opportunity to be involved in triathlon. We understand that cost and equipment may be a barrier for people so we want to support any aspiring volunteer coaches or those looking to make a career out of coaching to get started.

Who Should Apply?
 

You should apply for this scholarship if:

  • 18 or over.
  • Cost or equipment are a significant barrier to you participating in triathlon and becoming a coach. 
  • You have an interest in becoming a coach and volunteering or working in community and club settings.

All individuals, regardless of experience and ability are encouraged to apply and will be given equal consideration for the coaching scholarship.

Scholarship recipients will receive the following benefits over 2 years:

  • Course fees for one Tri Leader course and 1 Level 1 course (value of €420)
  • Travel costs agreed in advance
  • TI membership for 1 year
  • Safeguarding 1 course fee
  • First aid course fee (selected by Triathlon Ireland)
  • Loan of a bike for courses if required
  • Specific kit  that may be required. This will be assessed on a case by case basis.
  • TI Coach top
  • 1:1 Mentor/coach developer support for 6 months following the level 1 course.
  • Attendance at 4 CPD courses over the course of 2 years

    Criteria:

    1. Be nominated by a club, charity organisation or apply on their own. 
    2. Be an aspiring leader or have experience in a leadership role.  
    3. Demonstrate interest or be on a career track to become a professional coach.
    4. Demonstrate commitment to contributing to the social impact in their community through mentorship and support of other coaches  and delivery of community programmes following course completion. 

     

    Application Process
    1. Application Form: Complete the application form 
    2. Call: You will then be contacted to set up a call to discuss your application
    3. Vetting: Complete Garda Vetting/Access NI

     

    Expectations of the Coach
    • Attend all course days
    • Complete all course work
    • Attend Safeguarding 1 course
    • Complete first aid course

    Courses are delivered in English, however we are happy to work with the coach to see how we can make this a success.

    Opportunities during and after the scholarship:
    • Attend shadowing opportunities with other coaches
    • Attend additional learning opportunities. 
    • Possibility of paid coaching work for some graduates.
