Tried and Tested Dungarvan Youth Series
Back to Dungarvan for day 2 of a fantastic weekend of triathlon racing hosted by Tried and Tested Triathlon Club. Today’s race which is part of the Triathlon Ireland Youth Series sponsored by Costcutter saw 26 athletes participating in the 12 to 13 age group and 15 in the 14 to 15 age group.
Starting with the 12 to 13 age group who had a 300 metre swim, 6.76 kilometre bike, and 1500 metre run to take on. All athletes entered the calm water together, but it was Ryan Byrne Nolan who exited first with the fastest swim split of the day, 5 minutes 22 seconds, followed by Eoghan Looney and Sam Sanders. In the female race, Anna Brett was the first to complete the swim distance in a time of 5 minutes and 48 seconds, just over a minute later Orna Ni Mhuiri followed out in second place and Lucy Cunningham exited in third place.
After T1, all athletes had the fast and flat bike course to take on. MJ Walsh had the fastest bike split taking him 12 minutes and 28 seconds to complete the distance followed by Ryan Byrne Nolan, and Eoghan Looney with Ben Storey shortly after. For the females, Lucy Cunnighman covered the bike course in 14 minutes 11 seconds, closely followed by Luisne DePaor, Anna Brett and Ciara O’Donovan. Huge kudos to all the athletes who navigated their way around the tight turnaround points impeccably, for spectators, it was fantastic to see such amazing skill on display!
Swiftly through T2, the athletes were ready to run. Running parallel to the water’s edge and with great support from the ever growing spectators, Eoghan Looney had the quickest run split in a time of 5 minutes 31 seconds, with William McNally running second fastest and Alex Manager taking the third fastest run time. Anna Brett ran the fastest over the distance in a time of 6 minutes 38 seconds in the female race, Nell Marshall took the second fastest time on the run course, followed by Natalie Barry.
With all three disciplines (four if you include transition!!) now complete and calculated it was Ryan Byrne Nolan, fresh off the back of his second place podium in the Youth National Championships in Cahore on Saturday, who took first place in the male race, with second place awarded to Eoghan Looney who also raced on Saturday and third to MJ Walsh another athlete who raced in Cahore on Saturday. Anna Brett took first place in the female race, second place went to Lucy Cunnigham and third to Luisine DePaor
In the 14 to 15 age group, they were ready for the race which consisted of a 400 metre swim, a 10.14 kilometre bike, and a 2500 metre run. Similar to the previous 16 to 17 and 12 to 13 age group race, these athletes had a mass start from the shore. Plenty of high knees and porpoise dives through the water and they were into their stride. Kevin McNally was the fastest swimmer on
the day in 6 minutes 59 seconds, Darragh Lazenby was the second fastest, followed by Matthew Mahoney. Sophie Currie was the fastest female completing the swim course in 7 minutes 45 seconds, followed by Lara Buck and Amy O’Rourke.
As the grey clouds started to roll in, the athletes quickly transitioned from swim to bike. Finaly Carry covered the bike course the fastest in 16 minutes 41 seconds, followed by Kevin McNally taking the second fastest time, and Matthew Mahony the third fastest. Lara Buck not only had the quickest T1 for the females, she also had the fastest bike split completing the three loop course in 19 minutes 14 seconds, with Amy O’Rourke taking second fastest, and Sophie Currie for third fastest.
The bikes were rapidly racked, helmets hung up, and shoes swapped – these amazing athletes were ready to run. 2500 metres up the stunning Clonea Strand was an amazing sight to watch. Matthew Mahony was the fastest over the run leg in a time of 8 minutes 30 seconds, Peter Woods was the second fastest on the run, and Finaly Carry the third fastest. Maintaining her lead, Lara Buck was the quickest female runner with a time of 10 minutes 6 seconds, followed by Amy O’Rourke, and Sophie Currie.
All discipline times were accumulated and 1st place was awarded to Matthew Mahony, 2nd to Kevin McNally, and 3rd to Finaly Carry in the male race, and 1st place awarded to Lara Buck, 2nd to Amy O’Rourke, and 3rd Sophie Currie in the female race. All these athletes also raced at Youth National Championships in Cahore on Saturday so a well deserved round of applause for you all!
