Athy Flat Out Duathlon

Athy Flat Out Duathlon: Gallery and Race Report

Round 8 of the 2026 Duathlon National Series visited Athy for the Flat Out Duathlon on 29th March, with Lara Buck and Leo Corry securing number one positions for the Open and the Female podiums.

Grey Start but high spirits

Sunday morning was grey, cold and overcast with strong wind gusts and occasional showers. Despite the cold conditions Athy Tri Club volunteers members, all wearing matching Athy pom-pom hats, gave a warm welcome to competitors at the race hub set up at Athy’s Primary Care Centre.

Run 1 Fast and Flat

The opening 3km run followed a familiar route – wide, smooth and flat tarmac of the shared path along the Athy Distributor Road, meaning athletes could easily find their pace, setting up a fast opening leg.

Bike - strong headwind on a fast course

The bike course, a 23km out-and-back on the N78 Road, offered a mix of speed and challenges. A short run with bike uphill from transition before joining the Dublin Road and heading onto the course.

With the race getting its name from the typically fast (and flat) course the cold winds turned it into a real test, with strong headwinds on exposed sections.

Despite the conditions, the course was lined with spring daffodils, adding a bit of a distraction for some competitors and the extra effort required!

Run 2 and finish line push

The final 3km run mirrored the first, demanding one last push from already tired legs.

Athletes were welcomed back to the finish line under the arch with a medal from young Athy Tri Club members as well as all-essential banana and water, and a much-needed warm-up from the coffee cart!

Open Race Highlights

The racing was tight throughout, with less than a minute separating the podium and just over three minutes covering the top ten.

While some athletes posted standout individual splits (particularly on the bike), it was consistency across all three disciplines that proved most effective for winner Belpark TC Leo Corry taking the win in an impressive 57:35.

  2. Ciaran Kyne (Piranha Triathlon Club)  00:57:55

  3. Jonathan Oakey (racing in Galway Triathlon Club kit)  00:58:33

Female Race Highlights

The women’s race delivered a fantastic mix of youth and experience, with standout performances across multiple age groups.

Young athlete Lara Buck set an early pace on the opening run, while experienced competitors demonstrated the value of consistency across all three disciplines.

As with the open race, the bike leg proved decisive in the challenging wind conditions, with those managing effort effectively gaining valuable time.

Strong all-round performances from athletes such as Andrea Brennan and Tracy Donohue secured podium positions – the race saw impressive performances across all age groups.
