New All Ability Triathlon in Waterford
South East All Ability Triathlon with Waterford Sports Active
A brand-new triathlon event designed to encourage individuals with intellectual (learning) disabilities to experience the sport will take place on Wednesday 20th May 2026 at the Kingfisher Club in Waterford. The inaugural Triathlon Ireland and Waterford Sports Partnership South East All Ability Triathlon aims to provide a welcoming and supportive introduction to multi sport for participants who may not have had the opportunity to try triathlon before.
The event is being delivered by Triathlon Ireland, with support from Waterford Sport Partnership who have funded the use of the venue’s pool and athletics track. The initiative will also be supported through monthly training sessions leading up to the event, helping participants build confidence and skills before race day.
Entrants will experience the excitement of a real triathlon environment while participating at their own pace. After completing the challenge, participants will cross the finish line to be greeted by the Triathlon Ireland team and receive a well-earned finishers medal.
Triathlon Ireland Development Officer Jo Sweetman, who has been involved in organising the event, explained that inclusion is central to the initiative.
About the event
Participants will begin in the pool at the Kingfisher Club before moving outdoors, where the nature trail will be used for the run section and the athletics track will host the cycling element. Working with Local centres, the event has been created specifically for individuals with intellectual disabilities, some of whom may not otherwise have the opportunity to try multisport or experience a full race environment at standard triathlon events.
Families are encouraged to attend and cheer on participants. Volunteers will be on hand throughout the event to assist athletes. Additional facilities will also be available to allow participants to take time out if necessary.
The initiative builds on growing efforts by Triathlon Ireland to make triathlon more accessible across the island of Ireland.
