Membership Auto-Renewal FAQ
For the first time, Triathlon Ireland membership for 2026 will be auto-renewing on Tuesday, 14th October for those who have opted in.
We know that there may be some questions around your membership and auto-renewal, so we have answered some of the most common questions below.
Important to note: All 2025 memberships are valid until 31st December 2025. If your membership auto-renews, your 2026 membership will start from 14th October 2025 and cover you until 31st December 2026.

Q1: Why was the auto-renewal feature introduced?
The auto-renewal feature was introduced to make the membership process easier for members and reduces administration for our office. Many membership-based services move to auto-renewal because it is the most effective way to protect members’ access to their benefits and supports long-term engagement, while still offering the option to opt out if preferred.
Q2: Which membership types are eligible for auto-renewal?
The following membership types will auto-renew for the 2026 season:
- TI Full Membership with Club Membership Discount – €83
- TI Full Membership without Club Membership – €96
- TI Full Swim+ Membership with Club Membership Discount – €100
- TI Full Swim+ Membership without Club Membership – €112
- TI Club Training Membership – €40
All other membership categories must be renewed manually via the member’s TI portal. Please note that your club membership is not included in auto-renewal.
Q3: When will auto-renewal payments be processed?
Auto-renewal payments for the 2026 season will be processed on 14th October 2025. Membership will then be valid until 31st December 2026.
Q4: Why is payment processed in October and not January?
Triathlon Ireland’s race season begins early in the year. Renewals have opened in October for the last number of years to allow members sufficient time to:
- Renew their TI membership
- Join or switch clubs
- Ensure full coverage for early-season races
- Align with the club affiliation timeline
Q5: How is the auto-renewal payment processed?
Payment is processed via Opayo, our secure third-party payment provider, using tokenisation. Triathlon Ireland does not store or access card details. The payment is charged to the card used during the 2025 membership registration for those who opted in.
Q6: Why am I receiving auto-renewal emails?
Members currently opted in to auto-renewal will receive these notifications. Auto-renewal was introduced with the 2025 season; if you opted in at that time, you are enrolled in the system and will receive related communications.
Q7: Can a club opt out of auto-renewal on behalf of its members?
No. Only individual members can opt out of auto-renewal by logging into their own Triathlon Ireland membership accounts.
Q8: What happens if a member does not opt out before the deadline?
If a member remains opted in as of 14th October 2025, their membership payment will be processed automatically. Opt-outs cannot be applied retroactively. Multiple reminder emails are issued in advance to provide notice.
Q9: How can a member opt out of auto-renewal?
Members may opt out at any time before 13th October 2025 by:
- Logging into their TI membership account (desktop recommended)
- Clicking the ‘Membership’ tab
- Selecting ‘My Memberships’ from the dropdown
- Clicking the ‘Cancel’ button to opt out
Note: TI staff are unable to opt members out; this must be completed by the individual through their account.
Q10: I do not see the option to opt out. Why?
If you don’t see the option to opt out, it means either:
- You’ve already opted out previously, or
- You never opted in to begin with.
Q11: What happens if my payment is declined?
If your payment fails, your membership will not be renewed and you will not hold a valid license for the 2026 season. You will receive an email alerting you that your payment has declined. Your 2025 membership is in place until 31st December 2025.
Q12: Can I update the card used for auto-renewal?
No. Because Triathlon Ireland does not store payment details, it is not possible to update the card on file. To use a different card, you must:
- Cancel your current recurring payment
- Manually re-subscribe using the new card and opt in again
Q13: Why did I receive an email stating that I cancelled my membership?
This email refers only to the cancellation of your recurring payment. Your current 2025 membership remains valid until 31st December 2025. Only a Triathlon Ireland staff member can manually cancel your TI membership.
Q14: If I opt out, does that cancel my membership?
No. Opting out only cancels the recurring payment agreement. Your membership remains active until its original expiry date: 31st December 2025.
Q15: I did not receive a renewal email. Why?
Only members who are currently opted in to auto-renewal receive renewal notifications. If you have opted out or never opted in, you will not receive these emails.
PAYMENT & SECURITY
Q16: How are payments handled if my currency is not in euros?
All payments are processed in euros. Your bank will convert the charge into your local currency at the prevailing exchange rate on the date of the transaction.
Q17: Does Triathlon Ireland store my card or bank details?
No. All payment processing is handled through our secure provider, Opayo, using tokenization. This means your sensitive information is replaced by a secure token for future transactions.
Q18: What data does Triathlon Ireland retain for recurring payments?
Triathlon Ireland does not retain any card or payment credentials. The system uses a secure token ID from Opayo to process recurring transactions. The only variable controlled by Triathlon Ireland is the transaction amount.
CLUB MEMBERSHIP & CHANGES
Q19: How does club membership work with auto-renewal?
While your Triathlon Ireland membership will auto-renew, your club membership must be renewed manually through your TI portal after your club has affiliated for the new season.
Q20: What if I am changing clubs next year?
Whether opted in or out, if you are switching clubs, you must manually renew your club membership for the 2026 season.
Q21: Will I be charged the club discount rate if my club hasn’t yet affiliated?
Yes. Your 2026 TI membership cost is determined at the time you opted in. Club affiliation status at the time of payment does not affect the rate. However, if you affiliate with a club later and qualify for a discount, you may email reception@triathlonireland.com to request a refund of the difference.
