Silver for Millar in Portugal

Mark Millar Alhandra 2020

It's well and truly autumn time in Ireland but due to cancellations because of Covid-19, the international season is only just underway. Last weekend three Irish high performance athletes travelled to Portugal and Italy, here's how they got on.

Silver for Millar

The Portugese riverside town of Alhandra, just upstream from Lisbon was a superb location for the latest round of the Paratriathlon World Cup.

Competitors had nearly perfect conditions for the sprint distance events across all paratriathlon categories.

Donnacha McCarthy Alhandra 2020

Donnacha McCarthy with guide Tom Flaherty were up first in the PTVI category, finishing 10th in a battling performance which saw them encounter some issues on the swim and bike which left them unable to claw back positions, despite running one of the fastest splits of the day.

Shortly afterwards, there was better news however as Mark Millar claimed his first ever international podium. Millar finished in second place in the PTWC category. The Northern Irishman was making his second international start ever following an appearance in Devonport, Australia back in February.

Ian Manthey Arzachena 2020

Later that same day, Ian Manthey went up against some world class opposition in the Sardinian town of Arzachena.

Multiple laps of a steep and challenging bike course, and a field that included Alastair Brownlee, Vincent Luis, Kristian Blummenfeld and Gustav Iden meant the pace was hot from the off.

Manthey left himself some work to do following his 9mins 48sec swim but he clawed back positions on the bike and especially on the run to finish in 46th place.
