My Triathlon Triathletes are extraordinary people with inspiring stories to tell. We asked our community to answer a few questions in their own words as part our "My Triathlon" series, to share their stories and keep our community connected. This week, meet Martin Kirby and Michael Carroll. Michael CarrollTullamore Triathlon ClubHow and when did you start triathlon?I did the first ever triathlon held in Ireland in 1983. I was a marathon runner at the time looking for a new endurance challenge, and the Skerries race was the start of a wonderful sporting journey for me.Biggest achievement in Triathlon so far?Becoming a competitive Triathlete in my twenties and still being competitive in my Age Group (60-64). I did not have the running ability to be competitive as a Marathon/Road Runner back in the eighties, but when it came to combining three events, a strong bike and run enabled me to be a competitive triathlete. My biggest achievements were to finish 10th in the All Ireland Triathlon in Sligo in 1986 (4 Hours 33 mins) and finishing 10th in the first ever Triathlon National Series in 1987. In 2019 and after a number of years away from competition I did the BMW Triathlon National Series again and was thrilled to finish 10th in the 55-59 Age Group.What do you love about the sport?The Age Group aspect of Triathlon is what really motivates me to continue swim/bike/run training and satisfies the competitor in me :)What's your favourite triathlon race?It is the Pikeman Triathlon run by Wexford Triathlon Club. It’s a great course in the sunny south east and is always a brilliantly run race. Well done to Wexford Triathlon Club. Swim, bike or run and why?It used to be running but now that I’m older and with an improved swim technique it’s definitely swimming.Martin KirbyCork Tri ClubHow and when did you start triathlon?Decided on a whim to enter a triathlon to test myself, With my first Tri being Moby DickBiggest achievement in Triathlon so far?Completing Moby Dick swim having not swam in open water in years, terrified for the whole swim!What's your favourite triathlon race?Yet to be decided!
