Covid-19: ROI Training Update

Following yesterday's Government announcement regarding further restrictions for ROI, Triathlon Ireland would like to provide the following update for triathlon training.  Level 5 restrictions will come into place tomorrow, 24th December 2020 and will be in place until the 12th of January, at which point they may be reviewed. 

We know the change in restrictions at this time of year is difficult for everyone, and we ask everyone in our community to keep up the great work in adhering to the guidelines and keeping one another safe.

The government guidelines

Outdoor golf and tennis are permitted.

Training and matches

No training or matches should take place, with the following exceptions:

  • non-contact training in pods of up to 15 may take place outdoor
  • professional, elite sports, horse-racing and greyhound racing and approved equestrian events are permitted to continue behind closed doors

All other training activities should be individual only.

No exercise or dance classes are permitted.

Gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools
Gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools may remain open for individual training only.

what does this mean for triathlon training?

Triathlon Training remains the same as in Level 3 of the Return to Training Protocol. We have updated the Return to Training Protocol document to include the new dates and guidelines so that it is clear for our clubs and members.

Outdoors

  • TI members can train together outdoors in multiple groups of 15.
  • From 27th December 2020, TI members can train within their own county.

Indoors

Club pool sessions can take place, however this will be at the discretion of the pool operator and as before, sessions must be invividualised. The following must be in place;

  • Social distancing restrictions in place at the pool must be observed.
  • Sessions are individualised rather than group or pod based. The numbers below allow sufficient spacing to be classified as individual training, with a club coach leading the session.
  • Each individual should be given their own start and end point to avoid congregation at either end of the pool.
    →  50m Pool – up to 6 individual athletes per lane
    →  25m Pool – up to 5 individual athletes per lane
    →  20m Pool – up to 4 individual athletes per lane
  • A maximum of 2 coaches per session, working from opposite sides /ends of the pool

No other indoor training permitted.

Pods

Training pods should be maintained and pods should avoid mixing. Coaches & Instructors should be included in the pod sizes. Congregation pre and post sessions should be avoided.

These training restrictions will be in place until the 12th of January, at which point they may be reviewed. Page 10 of the Return to Training Protocol has been updated to reflect these changes.
