5 May 2020 - Triathlon & Covid-19 Update

In light of the announcement on Friday, 1st May relating to the Government Roadmap for Reopening Society and Business, Triathlon Ireland would like to provide an update on how these changes affect the triathlon community prior to Phase One commencing on 18 May 2020.

What’s Changing for Triathlon Training?

Today, there are just a couple of things that are changing under the Government Guidelines:

  • people can travel up to 5 kilometres from their home to exercise

  • those who are cocooning can leave their homes for exercise so long as they avoid all contact with other people

We hope that as the Government Guidelines extend, triathletes will be able to do more and more in the coming months. The triathlon community has been fantastic since social distancing came into effect, carry on leading the way, and remain patient. We will issue further guidance in relation to training in Phase One over the coming weeks.

A reminder for all our members that it remains against Government Guidelines to take part in Open Water Swimming as a form of exercise. Please do not use open water swim venues for recreation or exercise. You can read the Government, Irish Coast Guard and RNLI advice, updated last week, here.

Club Training

All club training will remain suspended until 18 May. In the interim Triathlon Ireland is working closely with Sport Ireland, clubs and other relevant stakeholders to create guidelines for enabling clubs to return to train, and establishing a date for when this will be possible.

Events

It remains Triathlon Ireland’s plan to commence the triathlon season in July, subject to approval by Sport Ireland and the Government. We are currently seeking clarification from the Government and Sport Ireland in relation to where multisport events fit into the Government Roadmap, when we can begin outdoor racing, and the numbers of participants permitted to take part.

We are working closely with our clubs and race directors to establish guidelines for the hosting of multisport events that will adhere to social distancing guidelines. When we return to racing, it will be in a safe and responsible manner for all involved.

We will have clear guidelines on this in the coming weeks, and will update our community as soon as possible.

If you have any questions or require any clarification on the points above you can always reach any member of our staff, who are all currently working from home. Contact details are in the Staff Directory. You can also refer to our FAQs around triathlon and Covid-19 here.
