Race Report: James McManus Memorial Triathlon

Conor McGandy and Ellen Vitting won the 7th edition of the James McManus Memorial Triathlon in Cavan. Organisers Cuilcagh Triathlon Club sent the following race report: 

Brackley Lake in West Cavan was the setting for the 7th annual James McManus Memorial Triathlon on Saturday 1st June. The weather stayed fine for the 136 athletes who entered the 14 degree water for the 11am start.

McGandy Leads from Start

In the men's race, Conor McGandy from Olympian Triathlon Club in Belfast led from start to finish coming out of the water in a group of three just behind Trudie Gillic from Virginia Tri Club and ahead of Emmett Mullen from the winning relay team.

These three were followed closely by James Keenan from the host club Cuilcagh with the rest of the field well strung out in the water.
Paul Rutherford from Sligo Triathlon Club put in a blistering bike leg to move from 5th to second and held this position on the run finishing in a time of 1:03:24 behind McGandy who finished in 1:02:42. James Keenan rounded off the podium in a time of 1:04:16.

Vitting Wins Women's Race

In the women's race, last year's BMW Triathlon National Series winner Ellen Vitting from Tri An Mhí won convincingly in a time of 1.07.08 finishing 9th overall. Dympna Kelly from Lough Key finished in second in 1:11:32 helped by a very strong bike leg. Ciara Brady from Cavan Tri Club put in the fastest run of the day to move through the field and claim third in 1:15:18.

James McManus Triathlon Cake

A great atmosphere post race with plenty of hot food for everyone and the now customary cake for anyone lucky enough to claim an age group prize.
