Porter leads from start to finish

In the women's field, Emma Porter in Wave 1 put in her characteristically strong swim to head into T1 second overall, just over 30 seconds behind men's leader Michael Moran. Eimeir Walsh and Esther Bayon rounded out the top three women at this point, meaning female athletes held three of the top four spots overall after the swim.

Porter held her lead out on the bike course with Ellen Vitting and Maeve Maher-McWilliams working hard to make back the swim deficit and entering T2 in second and third respectively. Putting in one of the fastest runs of the day in 20:17, Maher-McWilliams overtook Vitting in the closing stages of the run course to claim silver, Ellen Vitting in third place 28 seconds back. Leading from start to finish and never looking under pressure, Emma Porter is the first winner of the 2019 BMW Triathlon National Series in a time of 1:08:00.

Michael Moran takes an early season win

Leading from start to finish was the order of the day in Carlow today. In the men's race Michael Moran emerged at the front of Wave 1 after the swim and comfortably held that position through the subsequent bike and run phases. Just over a minute ahead of Cathal O'Sullivan and Guillermo Lopez at this point, Moran made sure he maintained that lead on the out-and-back 20km bike course.

Noel Kavanagh biked into second position but couldn't close any more of a gap and went out onto the run just under a minute behind Michael Moran. A large group of athletes exited T2 onto the run at similar times but it was Piranha club member Killian Nolan who out ran the others to finish in third.
