My Triathlon - Ailbhe Carroll

Triathletes are extraordinary people with inspiring stories to tell.

Here, High Performance athlete Ailbhe Carroll speaks about the mental health challenges she has faced as she chases her dreams.

Ailbhe also wrote a short piece for us below, outlining some context and the reasons why she is sharing her story.

My Triathlon Journey

The video definitely sums it up pretty well but it is obviously quite tricky to squeeze 5 years into a 4 minute clip. The ups and downs I experienced from 2012 to 2017 were all a piece of the puzzle that without, the end destination would probably not be as meaningful.

A piece of advice for dealing with struggles, the ups and the downs : Never let the challenge think it has the upper hand. It is very hard to beat a person who never gives up. Persistence will wear the challenge down and over time, you will come out triumphant. Its simple physics…right?!!!!

Seriously though, if you have a dream or a goal and there is a small hurdle standing in your way, please don’t let that scare you away. Anything you set your mind to is completely achievable and there is no reason why something/someone, should veer you off course.

Passion ignites fire and fire in the belly is always a good thing. Drive and determination will get you a long way. Hard work does pay off.

If your goal is to do your first triathlon or 5km, or if it is to climb Everest…whatever the magnitude, it is YOUR goal, so go get it.

I started playing camogie and riding horses. I told my Dad one summer whilst watching the swimming world champs, that I wanted to go to the Olympics. He asked me for what sport…I said I hadn’t decided yet and I would let him know. Well Dad, my chosen sport is ..!!!

They say early specialisation in sport is the only way to make it at the cut throat end of a sport…well, I beg to differ! I joined my first swim club at 17. Not 7! Anything is possible…even learning to swim later than ‘young’.

Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and read this piece. It’s awesome to share a story and hopefully I can help some of you out there in striving for goals in the future. I would love to hear from you with any feedback, or questions or comments. My social media platforms are all under the @ailbhedoodle title so look me up and get in touch.
