Duathlon National Series Heads to Galway

The second event of this year's Duathlon National Series got underway in Co. Galway over the weekend with the Tri Lakes Knockma Duathlon. The 2017 Tri Lakes Knockma Duathlon was held on Saturday the 28th of January in near perfect racing conditions for the time of year. A highly competitive field of 140 were at the start line for the second National Series race of the season including several age group winners from last year's series.

Greaney Claims Title 

In the men's race, John Greaney (Hurt Locker) came off the 4k hill loop and into transition holding a 41 second lead over Killian Heery (Muckno TC) and Gerald Troy (Ennis TC) with Rob Lennon (Galway TC) a further one second down. Heery then produced the fastest bike split of the day to lead Greaney by 26 seconds into T2 with Michael Flanagan (Tuam AC) in third 1min 43secs behind Greaney. 

On the final 2.6k run, Greaney passed Heery and turned onto the avenue with Heery snapping at his heels. In a fantastic finish John Greaney collapsed over the line just one second ahead Killian Heery, in a time of 56mins 44secs, a new course record. Rob Lennon came in 3rd, 2mins 45secs behind.

Carey Makes it Two in a Row

The women's race was won for the second year in a row by Lorraine Carey (Liquid Motion) in 1hr 03mins 43secs - a new women's record, taking nearly 4 minutes off her time from last year. Barbara Dunne (Hurt Locker) led Carey by 14 seconds into T1 with Marie Boyle (Hurt Locker) a further 1min 07secs back in third. Carey caught Dunne on the bike leg and the positions remained the same until they crossed the finish line with Dunne 1min 36secs behind Carey and Marie Boyle a further 2mins 16secs down in third.

Ronan Dirrane (Hurt Locker) won the Junior race in a time of 1hr 05mins 27secs.

Tri Lakes would like to thank everyone who helped out with the organisation of what was a hugely successful race and to all the athletes who competed on the day.
