Race Report: Mallow Aquathlon

One of Ireland's youngest triathlon clubs - Mallow TC - recently took a huge leap forward by staging their first ever aquathlon.

In this guest post, club member Bjorn Ludick fills us in on the action and the club's plans for further racing in North Cork this summer.

Mallow Aquathlon 2017 2

We in Mallow tri club have been thinking about this race series for a long time, and it has officially happened,  it was an amazing experience for the newly formed club from race organiser to athlete .

With an amazing setting in the Ballyhass lakes this race will have to be one of the most scenic Aquathlons around. With it being a wakeboarding mecca the vibe was very relaxed and everyone was smiling and in a good mood.

The race was a wet start and with the water temperature at 19C wetsuits were not compulsory. The water was crystal clear and flat as a pancake. The start was manic and the faster swimmers took off like a bullet. It was an anticlockwise swim where the spectators was able to see their swimmers throughout the whole 750m and at time able to be less that 10 meters away from the athletes.

James Mintern and Filip Kolodziej were the first two swimmers to finish the swim in a time of 8:23, there was a second swim pack over a minute back with the first female Swimmer and local girl Faye Mansfield from Mallow tri club in the pack.We also had a Para Swimmer Julian Boeg in the mix.

Then out onto the challenging 5km run where James Mintern showed his class and pulled away from Filip to finish the race with a brilliant 1 min and 12 seconds lead and an overall time of 28:19. Second finisher was Filip Kolodziej and 3rd went to Declan O’Donoghue.

In the female race, Faye was leading from start to finish giving the boys a run for their money. She also works in Ballyhass so had to prove something to her co-workers who were cheering her on all the way.

With Faye only new to the multisport world she is showing that she is one tough girl. Coming from a swimming background in Mallow Swimming club and running for fun we will definitely see her on another podium pretty soon.

The second place female finisher from Go Tri club was Eimear Laffan and 3rd went to Meave Lenihan.

We had a big range of abilities in our first race and looking forward to the next one of the series on the 26th of July.
