Nurturing Young Athletes at Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon

From jumping in a lake, cycling through the woods to running around a castle, Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon on May 27th & 28th is a playground of sport for adults and children alike. One quarter of the events at the triathlon festival this year cater for Junior and young triathletes aged 8-15 years old.

With 12 events for adults and juniors over 2 days in and around the stunning castle across a variety of distances there is a race to suit even the most inexperienced of participant regardless of age or ability.

For the budding young triathlete the opportunity to race with mum and dad in the Family Relay on Saturday offers a unique opportunity for children to take part in the hobby of their triathlete parent. The family relay team can also be made up of one adult plus three children.

Juniors also have the opportunity to race with their fellow budding triathletes or brothers and sisters in the Junior Relay with a 300m swim, 8km bike and 2.4km run, this is the final race on Saturday and one that will no doubt be a sporting highlight of the weekend.

Future Olympians

On Sunday 28th May, children get to race across three individual events depending on their age.  The events will cater for children aged 8-10 years, 11-12 years or 13-15 years. Each race has varying distances per discipline increasing the distance according to the age of the child.  With a host of ages catered for there is no shortage of opportunity for children to enjoy the sport of triathlon in a family, friendly festival atmosphere.

Speaking about the number of Junior events on the racing calendar for Lough Cutra Triathlon this year, Brian Adcock, Race Director of the event said:

‘Age Group athletes are the lifeblood of our sport around the world, junior athletes are the future of our sport. To nurture the future we are delighted to be in a position to host a number children and Junior events in Galway that not only encourage participation in sport but also encourage the culture of a lifelong hobby from a young age. Maybe there is a future Olympian or World Champion standing on the sidelines who just needs the opportunity to participate in the sport of triathlon to love it,’
