My Triathlon: Anna Grealish Triathletes are extraordinary people with inspiring stories to tell. Every fortnight, 'My Triathlon' features a story from someone in our triathlon community, told in their own words.Anna Grealish"When I found out I was pregnant in 2015 I was so excited. I was determined however to have an active pregnancy and keep up my training as much as possible. I got advice from other triathletes who had had babies and who had come back to racing afterwards. Although my training load reduced I was still able to swim and turbo right up to the day before I had my baby.""I was then very unlucky and complications afterwards meant that after struggling for several difficult months I ended up having surgery. It took me almost 6 months to be able to jog and 9 months before I could get back on the bike or swim.""Training had always been a huge part of my life and although I had a new baby I still missed the boost I got from exercise. So I made a plan to start small and I gave myself goals.""I started with walking everyday and gradually built up my fitness again. The park runs were my main goal and I wanted to be able to run 5KM without stopping. The first one I did was as hard as any olympic triathlon but I was determined and it was one of the best feelings to finally be back taking part in an event.""Once I got my confidence back it was just a matter of staying positive and doing a little bit at a time. I had to be patient. I love the feeling of taking part in an event with everyone and all the support you get from the participants, marshals and supporters is a real boost.""I was always nervous about racing but now I just feel so happy to be able to take part again that every time I hit that start line its with a smile on my face."As well as being a triathlete, Anna works as the Women's Participation Lead in Triathlon Ireland. My Triathlon focuses on the inspiring stories from the everyday people who form our triathlon community.
