It comes hot on the heels of Doherty's second place finish at Malmo's European Cup event in Sweden one month ago and his fifth place at ETU Tartu a month before that.

Doherty is already Ireland's second highest placed athlete on the ITU points list (the global athlete ranking that helps determine access to high level races), after Russell White. The result will also boost his ranking on the ITU World Series Rankings, the points table for the highest performing athletes, which Doherty entered following his 22nd place finish at Cagliari earlier this season.

Doherty's 1,500m swim time of 18mins 38secs saw him emerge from the water in 47th place in a pack of athletes that had considerable work to do to catch the front of the race, where Richard Varga completed the swim in an incredible 16mins 46secs.

Doherty posted one of the quickest bike splits of the day on the draft-legal cycle leg and went on to claw back even more places on the run, as his 32mins 35secs over the 10km - the 6th quickest of the entire field - resulted in his earning a superb 12th place.
