The banks of the River Suir was once again the setting for the Carrick on Suir Sprint
Triathlon 2017, the race is now in its 24th year and draws a large number of
triathletes from around the country and is also one of the preferred races for first
time participants to the world of Triathlon.

With an afternoon start, mixed weather conditions and 250 triathletes lined up
there was no clear favourite for the men’s race, although with James Mintern in
great form going into the race he was being tipped as a potential winner. The swim
was hotly contested with James out of the water in a pack with Carrick on Suir’s
Warren Roche and Cian O’Keeffe, Waterford’s Paul Ogle and Colm Turner. The bike
course mixed up the standings a little with James returning in first place but with
Paul and Colm close behind. The flat fast 5km riverbank route alone the Suir threw
up one more surprise with Colm putting in a blistering 16min run split the eventual
race standing were;

  1. James Mintern – Cork TC
  2. Colm Turner – B2R
  3. Paul Ogle – Waterford TC

Just as in the men’s race the women’s race was a hotly contested affair, Denise
Compton (last year’s winner) was the favourite to retain her title from the whistle.
There was not much in the swim between the first bunch out of the water but is
was a strong bike leg that gave Denise the slight advantage going into the run but
was being chased down hard Karen Phelan, Kelly Shannon and Hilkka Kontro.
Denise held on to take back to back Carrick on Suir Triathlon win’s, with Hilkka
putting in a strong run to finish 2 nd from Kelly Shannon.

  1. Denise Compton
  2. Hilkka Kontro
  3. Kelly Shannon

The Junior male event was won by Luke Lyons of Limerick Triathlon club who was
