Development Coach Stephen Delaney was pleased with the athletes introduction to senior elite competition.

“This was a first senior ETU event for all athletes although Chris Mintern raced as a Junior at this level and up to World Championship.”

“For Laura Tighe, Laura Wylie and Siobhan Gallagher it was a tough introduction as there was a small field but including many arriving from the European Games in Baku and a few with World Triathlon Series experience not least Lisa Norden and Gillian Backhouse who was 2nd in the U23 worlds in 2014.”

“The inexperience, despite showing good early pace, cost all 3 a chance to be in better position coming out of the water and having an easier bike but I am confident all 3 will progress well from the race and will race again along with Carolyn Hayes and Susanna Murphy, who are racing in Holten this weekend and again in France in 3 weeks’ time.”

“Chris got a great start but was swamped around the 1st buoy. While the whole field came out of the water in a long line there were enough gaps of one or two seconds to ensure there was 3 distinct groups on the road within the 1st kilometre on the bike. Chris rode very aggressively to get to within 15 seconds of the main group from which the winner came but a rider he was working with crashed which ended their effort. He will go to Holten next weekend and race with Russell White there along with Juniors Darren Dunne and James Walton.”
