Background
Although I was a particularly active teenager my sporting background is solely based around horses and competing at local shows and on the hunter trialing scene. I didn’t in fact learn how to swim until I turned 24 years of age and did so while I was studying at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth Texas (2000). When I began working in Trinity College in 2001, I began running at lunchtimes and although having a very slow start, I have since progressed into the world of duathlon and triathlon.
My first introduction to triathlon was a charity event in 2002 (tri to beat cancer triathlon) where I was placed second. From that point I was hooked but nerves always got the better of me when it came down to competing in races, so I hung my shoes up until the spring of 2004. I trained hard during the winter of 2004 and with a little help and encouragement from my friends, I started to put my neck on the line and compete. Although the season started off very well it was cut short due to family circumstances and I therefore didn’t get the opportunity to compete in any of the National Series races and as a result, I am not ranked.
During this winter and early spring my base training was hampered with illness as I was one of the unfortunates to contract the mumps virus, which resulted in 2 months of inactivity. I do however believe that this forced rest allowed my fitness and strength to peak at the right time during this seasons races as although I had a slow start, I have finished the season well and in good spirits.
