€40M announced by Minister Ring for 2014 round of Sports Capital Programme
A new €40 million fund for important sports capital projects has been announced by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring.
The Sports Capital Programme is the main channel of Government support for developing sports facilities and purchasing sports equipment for sports clubs and organisations across Ireland.
“The 2014 Sports Capital Programme will again provide much needed capital funding for sporting organisations throughout the country. The 2012 Programme saw a record number of applications and we are acutely aware of the very high level of demand that exists for such grants. I am delighted to announce that we will be making allocations totalling €40 million next year. Under the programme pitches will be drained, floodlights will be installed, sports halls will be improved and dressing rooms will be built. Thanks to these grants, people will have more opportunities than ever to get active and stay active in a wide range of sports. It will also have a positive impact on job creation in construction,” Minister Ring said.
“The terms and conditions of the programme have been finalised and it will open for applications on 17th January 2014. Applications for the 2014 programme will only be accepted online, and organisations must be registered in order to apply.”
- Open for applications from 12 noon on Friday 17th January;

About the Sports Capital Program
The Sports Capital Programme (SCP) is managed by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and provides grants to assist in the development of sports facilities and the provision of sports equipment throughout the country.
Grants are available to sports clubs, voluntary and community groups, national governing bodies of sport and local authorities. Third level colleges, VECs and schools may also apply for funding jointly with sports clubs.
In terms of triathlon there are a wide variety of things which are eligible for funding. Development of training facilities, race venues, safe open water swim locations for seniors & juniors, training equipment such as a stock of turbo trainers, kids bikes, paratriathlon equipment etc. Clubs can also team up with other local clubs if the facility/equipment will have a shared use. (Tri club, swim club, canoe club and rowing club all using an open water facility which requires changing rooms).
The Sports Capital Programme is now online in a system called OSCAR (Online Sports Capital Register). This will be the only way to apply for grants under any future rounds of the Sports Capital Programme. OSCAR will also allow groups to view previous grants and payments, change contact details, seek payment of a grant and otherwise communicate with the Department online. Any organisation that wishes to make applications using the system must first register online.
A Guide to Registering for the Online System is here<http://www.dttas.ie/sites/default/files/corporate/guide-registering-scp-online.pdf>
Sports Capital Grants – Triathlon
Last year almost half of the applications received were invalid, highlighting the fact that preparation prior to submission will be critical. Surprisingly in 2012 just one triathlon club applied to receive a slice of the €30 million which was on offer in the last round of funding. This year we want to ensure that triathlon clubs get a greater proportion of this funding so if you need any assistance with your registration process or would like to bounce some ideas around on what your club would like to apply for please get in touch.
