Prospective race organisers are reminded that 2010 race applications will close on 31st January. This applies to all standard races but allowance MAY be made for specific events which meet the needs of target groups, especially those providing opportunities for children. Each late application claiming special status will be assessed and require approval from the board.

As our sport continues to grow, we have struggled to get the necessary volunteers to provide a satisfactory level of Technical Delegate and Referee cover at each event. Closing the applications for races allows the early allocation of officials and the training of race organisers. Safety is our over-riding priority.

New for 2010 is the requirement of each Race Director to have completed a Technical Delegates training course. Too often in the past, officials have found that some race organisers have limited knowledge of the safety aspects of triathlon. We aim to upskill all organisers and assist them in providing safer, more enjoyable events.

A series of Technical Delegate/Referee courses will therefore be run across the country during February and March. Provisional locations are Antrim, Cork, Dublin and Galway. Thanks to the efforts of Karl Vekins, this is a newly devised and enhanced course looking at the practical side of race organisation. All those already qualified as a TD/Referee are also invited to attend. Full details will be posted on the website and circulated through the clubs over the coming weeks.
