2017 Reviewed - Women's National Series Growing in popularityThe sport of triathlon is growing year on year and with an ever increasing number of women taking part in the largest national events, the National Series is getting increasingly competitive. The 2017 National Series consisted of 16 events made up of nine Sprint, five Standard and one Middle Distance races. The National Series is the premier age group competition in Ireland featuring some of the top events in the country. Series events are located in all provinces of the country in order to provide, as best as possible, an accessible spread of races.An athlete's four best scoring races in a season, of which one must be sprint distance and one must be standard distance, determine the triathletes ranking in her age group.Early Season VictoriesThe winner of this year's Women's National Series is Belpark Tri Club member Maeve Maher-McWilliams. Maher-McWilliams had an outstanding season, racing in City of Derry, Westport Triathlon, Hell of the West and Pulse Port Beach and finishing on 471.116 points. Impressively, Maeve amassed three quarters of her points within just two weeks and three races in June.the battle for second placeThings were much closer in the competition for 2nd place in the National Series between Jessica Bruton and Amy O'Keeffe. It came right down to the wire at the last race of the season, the Moby Dick Triathlon in Youghal. Appropriately, both athletes represent Cork Triathlon Clubs. The two athletes came into the race with just two points separating them. In order for Jessica to hold on to second place in the NS table, she needed to beat, or finish very close behind, Amy.Amy O'Keeffe put in a hugely impressive swim and bike to enter the run two minutes ahead of Jessica Bruton.
